Caerlaverock Castle and the Solway Wetlands
South of Dumfries, Caerlaverock Castle is one of Scotland’s most distinctive medieval strongholds.
Its triangular plan is unusual among British castles, while its moat, gatehouse and ruined walls create one of the region’s most memorable historic settings.
The surrounding Solway landscape is equally significant. Nearby wetlands, mudflats and saltmarsh support large numbers of wintering birds, including the barnacle geese for which the area is renowned.
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Caerlaverock offers expansive views, wildlife hides and the broad skies of the Solway coast.
Current castle access arrangements should be checked before travelling, as conservation work can affect which parts of the site are open.
